How Do I Get Interviewed?

There’s no secret to telling your story.  You do it every day; in the elevator, in the checkout line, on the bus, in the break room and at dinner.  But there are some things you can do to help you tell it better to an audience.

Lots of people have lots of advice on how to overcome microphone shyness.  But the best advice for how to be during an interview boils down to these four points:

  1. Enjoy yourself - As you approach your interview, have fun thinking about what you want people to remember about you.
  2. Smile when you talk - Believe it or not, people can hear you smiling when you speak. Try it.  It’ll make it easier to be friendly during the interview.
  3. Be flexible - An agenda is fine, but sometimes, conversations go in unexpected directions that end up being better.
  4. When it’s over - Pay attention to the interviewer when they begin to wrap up.  They’re thinking about the editing, so make it easier for them so they can make you sound good.
